Jhulan Bai Baiga (1955–2022; Madhya Pradesh) was an artist based in and around Umaria. She began painting later in life and developed a distinctive body of work drawn from her surroundings, featuring animals, trees, figures and scenes from everyday life.
Her practice took shape in the context of the Ashish Swami Centre for Arts in Umaria, where women from the region were encouraged to explore painting and develop their own ways of expressing their experiences. Jhulan Bai developed an individual approach marked by vivid colour, intricate pattern and a strong sense of composition.
Her work, alongside that of other women artists who emerged from Umaria, has contributed to the wider recognition of Baiga art and its place in contemporary Indian art. In 2023, her works were included in The ROOTS: Art from the Tribal Heartland of India, presented with the Crites Collection.
