Gigi Scaria

Gigi Scaria was born in southern Kerala, India, in 1973. In 1995, after completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram, Scaria moved to New Delhi where he undertook a Master of Fine Arts at Jamia Millia University. While both of his degrees were in the discipline of Painting, he has developed a cross-media practice. Scaria works across painting, photography, installation, sculpture, and video. His work explores issues of urban development, particularly in relation to migration, economic development and urban architecture. He is interested in the quality of social space in a drastically changing urban environment, with concomitant implications on psychological experience. Since 2000, Scaria has exhibited widely in India, and has participated in major exhibitions and residency programs internationally including in Australia, Brazil, China, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Korea, Italy, Norway, Sweden and the USA.

He received the ‘Sanskriti Award for Visual Art’ in 2005 and in 2009 was the recipient of the Asian Art Fellowship from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea. Scaria has participated in various residencies including CCA7 (Caribbean Contemporary Arts), Trinidad and Tobago (2005) and Michelangelo Pistoletto Foundation in Biella, Italy (2004).

His solo shows have included ‘Amusement Park’ at Gallery Chemould, Mumbai (2009); ‘Settlement’ at Galerie Christian Hosp in Berlin and Art Asia, Miami (2009); ‘New Perspectives From India’ at H Cube Gallery, Seoul (2008); ‘Triviality of Our Everyday Existence’ at The National Art Studio in Seoul, Korea and Palette Art Gallery, New Delhi (2008). Group exhibitions include ‘Expressions at Tihar,’ Ojas Art, New Delhi (2009); ‘Poetic Documentary’ at Aicon Gallery, London (2009); ARCO Art Fair, Madrid (2009); and ‘Chalo! India: A New Era in Indian Art’ at Mori Art Museum, Japan (2008)
