Belgur Mandavi is a Muria tribal artist from the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh. The Muria community, a subgroup of the larger Gond cultural world, is known for its rich visual traditions rooted in ritual life, forest ecology, and collective social practices.
Belgur Mandavi emerged as one of the early Muria artists whose visual language transitioned from customary wall and ritual imagery to works on paper during the early 1980s. His work came into wider recognition through his association with Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, particularly the Roopankar Museum, which played a formative role in introducing indigenous artists to national art platforms.
His paintings depict scenes of Muria life—dance, music, community gatherings, and symbolic motifs—rendered in a distinctive idiom that bridges traditional memory and contemporary presentation. Through participation in artist camps and exhibitions organised around Bharat Bhavan.
