Mayur & Tushar Vayeda

Mayur and Tushar Vayeda are Warli artists and brothers whose work redefines the intersection of folk tradition and contemporary art. Born into the Warli tribe of Western India, they are deeply rooted in ancestral practices while pushing the boundaries of what indigenous art can become in the modern world. Their creative base is in Ganjad, Maharashtra, in a former community school once run by their grandfather, Vasudeo Vayeda — a space now transformed into a vibrant studio and gathering place for young local artists.

For the Vayeda brothers, art is not just expression; it’s preservation. Motivated by a desire to revive and protect the deep cultural lineage of Warli art, they approach their practice with a sense of responsibility to their community and its oral traditions. Their work, while grounded in centuries-old tribal motifs, incorporates layered narratives, environmental themes, and experimental forms that connect past to present.

Beyond painting, Mayur and Tushar engage in extensive research into Warli mythologies, rituals, and symbols. Their artworks — ranging from village scenes and cosmic landscapes to oceanic realms — have been exhibited internationally in cities such as New Delhi, Paris, Hong Kong, Brisbane, and Fukushima. Despite global recognition, their artistic identity remains firmly tied to Ganjad, where tradition and storytelling continue to guide their evolving vision.
