Mayank Shyam (b. 1987) is a contemporary Gond artist and the son of the legendary Jangarh Singh Shyam, whose legacy he continues while forging a distinctive path of his own. Rooted in the traditions of Gond painting, Mayank’s work is marked by a unique visual vocabulary that blends ancestral symbolism with personal and contemporary narratives.
Mayank began his artistic journey at a young age and gained early recognition when he participated in his first group exhibition, Primal Force, at Kolkata’s CIMA Gallery in 2006. Since then, he has exhibited widely in India, with notable group shows including Kolkata Freedom: Sixty Years after Indian Independence (2008), In Search of Context (2009), and Yeh Image Mahan – India Meets Bharat (2010), presented at prestigious venues such as CIMA Gallery (Kolkata), Museum Gallery (Mumbai), and Chemould Gallery (Mumbai).
In 2006, he was awarded the State Award by the Hasta Shilpa Evam Hathkargha Vikas Nigam, Bhopal — a recognition of his early contributions to the field. At just 21, he was featured in the publication Freedom: Sixty Years after Indian Independence (2007) by the Art and Heritage Foundation, cementing his place among a new generation of Indian artists.
Mayank Shyam lives and works in Bhopal, where he continues to evolve his practice, bridging the rich legacy of Gond art with a fresh and imaginative approach that speaks to both tradition and innovation.
