Since the beginning of 2008, small groups of contemporary artists have been taken to Tihar Jail in Delhi, among the biggest prison-system in South Asia. The artists spend time inside the jail premises, interacting with the inmates, mainly
young adults in the age group of 18-21 years. Thus, getting a very close experience of prison environs and the inmates’
lifestyle inside.

Within the jails many rehabilitative career courses are run and many inmates have exemplified artistic excellence. Their artworks are regularly marketed by NGOs. At the visit, artists have a look at the existing gallery and advice inmate-artists on further improving their work or maybe show them how a drawing or painting is made.

A positive attitude towards inmates, shock, sympathy, empathy, disgust, admiration and total rejection are some of the emotions that the visits have generated, among visiting artists.
