In India, this orderly chain of events is often interrupted. Packaging intended for melting is instead repurposed for immediate use: as makeshift tablecloths for street vendors, for example, or as another layer in the thin walls and roofs of slum dwellings. Momo sellers, chaat stands, and local restaurants also use the packaging to make take-away bags for their food, so a samosa may come inside a bag that promises anti-aging skin cream.

The flags on display participate in this local Indian practice of repurposing consumer packaging material and, in the process, disrupt carefully crafted brand identities. Through the subtle interplay of different brand imageries, the flags playfully explore the tensions in Indian and American national identities.
