This exhibition is the culmination of a project that began two years ago in the US and expanded to include Indian materials and imagery. The flags on display are made of consumer packaging material, sourced from both the US and India.
When American companies modify their packaging designs or print spelling
and informational errors, for-profit recyclers in the US collect the
unwanted packaging and ship it overseas—most often to India and China.
There, the packaging is melted down and turned into plastic products
like children’s toys. The end-products made of recycled plastic are
then shipped back to the U.S. and sold to American consumers.
