Shiv Verma was born in 1976 in Chattisgarh and grew up in the village of Kondagaon, in the district of Bastar. He completed his Bachelors and Masters in fine arts from MS University, Vadodara. In 2008, he got the promising artist award from IHC and Art India magazine and also exhibited his works in Delhi. Coming from a place which is an important craft centre of India, Verma understands the techniques and nuances of tribal art and therefore succeeds in fusing traditional with contemporary. His works, while retaining their own individuality, manage to carry features of both tradition and contemporary cosmopolitan. Some of his selected shows are ‘Aspects of Collecting’ Essl Museum Klosterneuburg, Viana (2009); ‘Expressions at Tihar’, Ojas Art (2009); ‘Re-visioning Materiality’ Gallery Espace, Delhi (2008); ‘Saptarishis’ Visual Art Gallery, Delhi (2007) His works are in many prominent collections in India and overseas.
