Atul Dodiya

About The Artist

(b.1959, Maharashtra) Atul Dodiya completed his BFA from Sir J.J.School of Arts in 1982 and further studied at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1991-92. His paintings are infused with diverse traditions of painting, often including the written word, images from the media and autobiographical narratives. In his work, Dodiya includes imagery from saints, legends, national history, and political events, creating allegorical paintings that are both striking and poetic. Dodiya has held several solo shows in India and abroad, including a mid-career retrospective at the Japan Foundation Asia Centre, Tokyo and a solo show in the Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid. Selected exhibitions include ‘Urban Manners – 2’ in San Paulo, Brazil (2010); 3rd Moscow Biennale, Moscow (2009); Essl Museum, Vienna (2009); The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul (2009); Mori Art Museum, Japan (2008); 7th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2008); Kunstmuseum, Bern (2007); Documenta12, Kassel (2007); The Helsinki City Art Museum, Helsinki (2006); 51st Biennale, Venice (2005); Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris (2005).
